We have moved ....

I will no longer be posting here. I have decided to combine my website and my blog and have given them both a bit of a face-lift.

Slideshow : Outdoor Photography : County Down

I had a portrait session last week and the girls agreed that they wanted something a little bit different.

Rather than go to the beach or the local park - we decided to stay closer to home. I have the builders in at the moment. Actually they have been here since August ( they seem like part of the family now ).

Anyway - we made the most of their absence last weekend and took a few photos around the machinery. Heaven knows what Health and Safety would have had to say on the matter. Anyway the results are a far cry from the expected poses by the begonias !

Have a look and see what you think ....

Trash the Dress - Wedding Dress Photo Shoot.

Do you ever sign up to something, knowing that it's going to be a success and you are going to have great fun in the process ? Well this is what happened to me yesterday.

I was lucky enough to have the company of a great girl for a Trash the Dress fashion shoot.

'Trash the Dress' was initially an American idea, but it has now started becoming more popular over here. And why not? The cake and the champagne are all but a memory. What a great excuse for brides to wear their treasured wedding dress again and have beautiful fashion photographs taken as a memory of another brilliant outing.

Julie is a terribly busy lady. Not only is she a Personal Trainer, but she is also an avid fundraiser and events organiser. Not to mention that she is a Mum of four wonderful kids.

Our shoot started at the Ulster Folk and Transport Museum in Cultra.

Right from the off, Julie was open to any suggestions that would help us create some fabulous images. Actually is was her idea to jump up here :

We were so fortunate that the weather was kind to us - but poor Julie was terribly uncomplaining in the cold January wind on the beach.

My assistant for the week AJ ( a work experience student ) was able to get first hand understanding of how a shoot works, from start to finish. We had an absolute blast and I cannot thank Julie enough for making the session such fun and a great learning experience for AJ.

Why not make your dress happy and book yourself in for an exciting photo session.

Women In Business NI - Voices Heard - January 2011

Last week Women in Business Northern Ireland, ran an event at Parliament Buildings on the Stormont Estate. The event "Voices Heard", gave the organisation's delegates the opportunity to discuss the big issues affecting women in business today with the panel of highly successful women.

Some of the delegates were fortunate enough to have a tour of Parliament Buildings before the event started. We were given a potted history of the building itself - and were able to see the inside of the Chamber - but ( alas ) no photographs could be taken. This is as far as I got ...

The panel comprised a number of high profile ladies from across various business disciplines from within Northern Ireland.
The group was ably headed by new WIB member Pamela Ballantine. Pamela is a freelance Northern Irish television presenter, best known for her 27 year career at UTV.

Professor Yvonne Galligan, QUB
Yvonne Galligan is Professor in the School of Politics, International Studies and Philosophy at Queens University - Belfast. Yvonne is Chair of the Queen's Gender Initiative and runs the 'Women into Politics' programme through her academic work.

Anna Lo - MLA
Anna was born in Hong Kong and worked in London for a year prior to coming to live in Northern Ireland in 1974. She was awarded an MBE in 1999 for Services to Ethnic Minorities. In March 2007, she was elected to serve as the MLA for South Belfast for the Alliance Party, and consequently the first ethnic Chinese person to be elected to a legislative parliament in Europe.   Anna is a member of the Assembly committees for Employment & Learning, and Social Development.

Lesley Hogg - AES Kilroot Power Ltd
Director of Strategic and Regulatory affairs for AES in Northern Ireland. AES is the largest independent electricity generator in Ireland. Prior to this, Lesley was the CEO of Premier Power Ltd owner of Ballylumford Power Station.

Tracy Hamilton - Mash Direct Ltd
Tracy is a Director of Mash Direct Ltd. She is the first female to sit on the Board of NIFDA ( Northern Ireland Food and Drink Association ) and also sits on the Board of Food NI and the Industry Advisory Panel.

Christine Boyle - WIB, Past Chair
Christine is Managing Director of Lawell Asphalt Company Ltd. in the construction sector, specialising in Roofing and Waterproofing. Christine was a founder member of the Women in Business Network.

I always find the Women in Business events great fun and very inspiring. This event was no exception. We were able to hear how these successful ladies managed to juggle family life and business commitments and still come out ahead.

FREE Portrait Session ... Trash the Dress.

I am offering a FREE photo session for an adventurous lady who does not mind getting her wedding dress a teensy bit dirty.

If you aren't sure what Trash The Dress means - then allow me to explain.
It is a great excuse to get your wedding dress out of mothballs and to have another beautiful set of images taken. Historically the dress often got totally destroyed - personally I think that this might be a step to far - but I must warn you that it might need a bit of a dry clean by the end of the shoot!

If you are free either Wednesday 26th or Thursday 27th January and would like to give your wedding dress another airing then please get in touch. However, please note that if you don't have a wedding dress - then a formal dress or prom dress will do just was well.

I am a wedding and portrait photographer working in Helen's Bay, County Down; so if you could make it to Helen's Bay, then I have a number of fab locations in mind. The beach and Crawfordsburn Country Park aren't terribly far away.

The reason for this shoot is that I am wanting to pull together a panel of images to submit as an application to help me advance my professional photography qualifications. Some of the images might also be submitted for competitions.

In return I will provide you with a disk of the high-res images from the shoot that you can use however you wish.

Please have a look at my website for examples of my work.

If you are still interested, then please get in touch via email or facebook.

2011 SWPP Convention : Going Underground with Damian McGillicuddy.

I have returned from the 2011 SWPP Convention, all in one piece and I can safely say that my week in London was amazingly frantic and incredibly worthwhile.

I was able to stay with my brother and his family whilst I was there - however, I fear that I was guilty of treating them a bit like a hotel. But is was a real treat to return after a long hectic day to a bit of calm, not to mention the slightly earlier nights than some of my colleagues experienced!

Anyway, I am home and now - feeling very inspired and raring to go.

Over the next while I shall blog about my Convention highlights and give you an insight in to what I learnt whilst rubbing shoulders with the great and the good in the Photography world.
There was so much talent buzzing about - I was only sad that there were not enough hours in the day to meet everyone.

Damian ( The Big Dog ) McGillicuddy. My first day was spent with some like-minded photographers keen to learn about lighting techniques from Damian McGillicuddy.
It's so important for me to keep advancing my photography; and lighting was an area where I want to refine my skills.
We travelled to Aldwych Underground station - which is arguably the most used 'dis-used' tube station. It is often hired out to film and TV companies, so we were obviously in the right place.

Damian and Team McGillicuddy were terribly generous with both their time and advice. Below are a couple of images I came away with.

SWPP Convention 2011

I am so excited. I am heading to London for 5 days - on my own. But it's not quite a jolly - there is quite a lot of work involved. I am attending the SWPP ( Society of Wedding and Portrait Photographers ) Annual Convention.

Last year was my first year and believe me it was a real baptism of fire. This time around I know exactly what I am letting myself in for; so I am hoping that I am better prepared.

I have planned a chaotic time-table so I am going armed with notebooks and energy bars, cameras and comfy shoes.

Last year I was lucky enough to have booked myself on a Superclass with Jerry Ghionis. One comment he made really stood out to me.

You cannot necessarily be the best - but you should aim to be better than you were last month.

I wholeheartedly agree and I really want to keep progressing and improving my style. So this year, I have signed up to a number of Superclasses where I will have the opportunity of learning even more from the experts.

THURSDAY  :

Damian McGillicuddy : On Thursday I am heading with a few very lucky souls on a full day Location Seminar with Damian. We are heading to the London Underground for a fashion shoot. He is promising to 'propel my photography forward'. No Pressure then !

Let the photographer that the popular photographic press most often call "the magician" or the "lighting wizard" guide you through the mechanics of a full on fashion shoot.

I am really looking forward to this - but if I am being truthful - I am a teensy bit terrified.

FRIDAY :

Sue Altenburg : Is going to help me build my boudoir business. Women nowadays are wanting to treat themselves as well as their other halves to some beautiful imagery of themselves.
This area of the market is growing fast in Northern Ireland - and to be quite frank - I want a piece of it.

Trade Show : Personally speaking, I think that in order to be successful, we have to be able to offer the client something unique and it is crucial to keep abreast with what is available and different in the industry. And it is for this reason that I am attending the Trade Show on Friday. This is a chance for me to source new products and to meet the major manufacturers from all over the world. I feel also that it is important to nurture good working relationships with suppliers and this give me a chance to chat with the right people who can help me achieve the level of service of which I am very proud.

Becker [b] : Is one of the many photographer who has come over from the States. I have been a bit of a fan for a while now - so I look forward to him sharing his experiences in producing fantastic imagery and 'outstanding customer service for his clients that turn them into raving fans.' Yes please !

Art P Suwansang : Is a master with the computer and will share his expertise in the post production area of photography. This can be both time-consuming and laborious - and Art promises to put the magic back into editing.

Uzair Kharawala : is going to shed some light ( excuse the pun ) on the business strategies required to help a business survive the economic downturn. I think in this current climate it's prudent to address all challenges in business.

SATURDAY :

I have planned two great Superclasses.

Barrie Downie : In the morning, I am hoping to learn from Barrie how to enhance my wedding photography using supplementary lighting which will help me to create dramatic creative images.

Andrea Barrett : In the afternoon, I am going to learn more about working only with available light on location. Andrea is going to help me achieve stunning pictures which will differentiate me from the competition. Woo Hoo.

SUNDAY :

The Yerburys : I am really excited to be meeting Trevor and Faye on the Sunday afternoon. They are renowned for their portraits of women. I just know that I will learn a lot not only about capturing the images - but also an insight into refining my marketing techniques.

It's not all work however. I am also really excited to be meeting old friends in the industry and to meet up with some new ones. I find that those in the industry are a very generous bunch of folk and I look forward to catching up and comparing notes again this year.
